On Sunday morning, May 6, 1979, a small group of believers of 10 adults and one child met in a home in Windsor for worship. They prayerfully sought God’s blessing and confirmation of what was felt by all to be the leading of the Holy Spirit, to establish a church that was committed to the glory of God and the preaching of His wondrous sovereign grace which is found in Christ Jesus.
On June 24 of that same year, the group, having grown to 16 adults, gathered for worship and to celebrate the Lord’s Supper. It was on this day that the official signing of charter members took place. The name of the newly formed church was Berean Baptist Church.
The church increased in number and soon found it necessary to meet elsewhere, first in a high school, and then in a local community centre. In 1981 the church purchased a rundown corner store, which, over several months, was renovated and became our place of worship for the next eight years. The church laboured diligently in that difficult community. Our numbers continued to grow, even though we saw limited fruit from this particular area of Windsor.
In 1989 we purchased an old church building in Essex, in which we held our first worship service on the first Sunday in January of 1990. It was at this time that we officially changed the name of our church to Grace Baptist Church of Essex.
As a church we have rejoiced in mountain peak blessings, and have also descended into dark valleys of trials and heartaches. The Lord has graciously used both His providential blessings as well as the trials He has sent, to sanctify us, and strengthen the bond of love that knits our hearts together in Christ Jesus.
By God’s grace, we pray that this church will continue to know His presence and His blessings amongst us, as we seek to grow in our love for Him, and to conform to the likeness of His Son, our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ.
